BIG EARTHQUAKE.
RECORDED IN DOMINION.
8000 MILES FROM WELLINGTON.

WELLINGTON', this dar.
The seismographist at the Dominion Observatory started recording a big earthquake at 7.55 o'clock this morning. The distance of the 'quake is estimated at 8900 miles from Wellington. It is not of such magnitude as that which recently took place* in Java. There is insufficient evidence as yet to indicate its direction.
