CHILD WELFARE.
FIGURES FOR THE YEAR.
INCREASE OF DELINQUENCY
In a report for the year ended March 31, presented in the Children's Court to-day, the senior welfare officer, Mr. J. S. Cupit, stated that there was an increase of 35 in the total number appearing compared with last year. The figures showed an increase of 35 for delinquency, and a decrease of 20 for theft. Practically all the delinquency charges were theft, or of a kindred nature. There had been an increase in offence* classed as dishonest.
The report snowed that there had been a total of 374 cases, compared with 339 last year. Of the total 54 were girls. The children included 36 of pre-school age. 120 primary school. 31 secondary school. 135 working and 43 unemployed.
The report stated that juvenile delinquency was not confined to any particular district, but was fairly "generally scattered. The number of children who appeared for a second time was 13. The small number seemed to show that the methods of < the Court in dealing with children were correct.
