LITERATURE STUDY CIRCLE. The June meeting of the Literature Study Circle was held this week, the convener, Miss F. M. Quill, presiding. The subject for the evening was "Australian Drama, - ' the paper being read by the convener. In considering first poetic drama the speaker told of the first verse plays to be published in Australia, which were David Burn's. In the course of her talk the speaker mentioned Home's "South Sea Sisters." a lyric masque written for the opening of the intercolonial exhibition in iscii; "The Werewolf" bv William Forster and Alfred Deakin's "Qilciitin Massys." Since 1900 she said the standard had risen. Edward Yidler's "Those of Ravenna" gave some life to the old legend of "Paolo and Krancesca." In 1927 Jack Lindsay published four plays "Marina Fabliero." "Helen Comes of Age." "Ragnhild" and "Bossy lVamboise" which were filled with poetic imagery. The speaker dealt with the work of the better known Australian dramatists. The national Australian temperament ran to realism, concluded the speaker, and the plays were sincere and vital. Play readings were given by Mrs. M. Lusty and Miss Quill.
