TONY'S ADVENTURE.

: "I would like an adventure," said Tony to himself. ''Here's a whole holiday and I've no one to play with, because baby has- measles, and I'd love to have something jolly happen." He stared around him; there was nothing in sight and his mother had given him A packet of sandwiches and said he needn't come home until it was tea-time. If only there'd been something to play with he'd have been happy. Suddenly he heard a rustle and a squeak near him. Up he jumped. "Is there anyone there?" he called; he was on the edge of the big wood; there was no cottage for ever so far. Perhap6 someone in the wood had got hurt he' searched aboutthen he saw a little white dog which was licking its foot. Tony went to it and found it had a long thorn in its foot; ' This he took out, then he jjathed . the pa w in the stream and gave the little dog a bit of his food. How it ate! It was very thin and covered with mud- and sand. On its collar was ,a name and address, but the place was five miles, away. "Well, I'll take you home," said Tony; "it'll spoil my day, ' but I can't you here, and they'll be looking for you." So he started off. , It was hot and tiring, for he had to carry Jim (that was the name on the collar), a go,od deal; the foot was so sore. But at last he got him home and rang the bell. But no one answered; the house was shut up. And poor Tony had to go all the way back with Jim. But, first, he told the-policeman of the village and he said he'd tell Jim's people* when they came back.'. And what do you think happened as Tony and Jim wenttiome? Jim "stopped and sniffed hard, and there in ( the. wood was a five-shilling piece, lying' by an old fruit tin; it was very dirty, but a good coin. So Tony took it home and daddy said he thoughfhe might keep it, as only picnic people ever came to the wood and none had been since a year ago. So Tony had a big bit of luck; and when Jim's people came home he had another, for they found out he was longing for a model aeroplane, and . they gave him a real-beauty—"with love from Jim.'
