MORE THAN 17,000.
TELEPHONE SUBSCRIBERS. 1035 PEAK EXCEEDED. An indication 'of the return to prosperity is given by the increase in the number of subscribers to the Auckland telephone exchange. The exchange lost subscribers (luring the depression period, but it has now more than overtaken that lws, having been averaging over 200 new connections a month for the past twelve months. In 1927 the subscribers numbered 13,750, and by 1931 they had increased to 15,000. In the two succeeding yearn the figure dropped to approximately 15,250.' The position began to improve, however, in 1934' when the subscribers totalled 15,750. The number rose to 16,000 last year, and to-day it stands at over 17,000.
