SMOKE CONCERT.
PUBLIC SERVICE SPORTS
ENTHUSIASTIC GATHERING,
Some few weeks ago steps were taken by a few enthusiastic public servants to remodel the Public Service Sports Club and put greater life into the movement to organise the different departments under ! Public Service Commissioner control in the matter of sports and social activities. An executive committee comprising Messrs. F. W. Grey (chairman), T. A. IMcLeod (secretary), T. Dennett (assistant secretary), E. Coleman (treasurer), F. E. Sherwood, R. J. Thomas, W. Roberts, I A. S. Jameson, A. Drake and H. Hammond was appointed, and their first social function took the form of a smoke concert, which was held in Prior's cafe on Saturday ■ evening 'and was an outstanding success. There were over 150 guests present, including several Departmental heads. Mr. F. W. Grey (Agriculture) occupied the chair, and associated with him were Messrs. J. C. Malfroy (Justice), J. Mcintosh (Customs), R. H. Newbold (State Fire), K. M. Graham (Lands and Survey), C. E. Tennent (Treasury), C. J. Hurley (Valuation), J. H. Robinson (Native Land), T. H. Giles (State Advances). G. I. Beeson (Lands and Survey) and F. W. Schramm, M.P. A feature of the evening was the excellence of the toasts and responses and the attentive hearing given to eac-h speaker. Included in the toast list were: "The Club," 'proposed by Mr. Tennent, responded to by the chairman; "The Officers." Mr. Drake and Mr. J. Mcintosh; "Parliament," Jlr. J. C. Malfroy and Mr. F. W. Schramm; "The Artists," Mr. R. H. Newbold and Mr. Jock Bruce. A special toast to Mr. Frank Sherwood (Agriculture), one of the foundation members of the club, under transfer to Palmerston North, met with great applause. A very fine musical programme was contributed to 'by Messrs. Alan McElwain, Reg. Rushen, S. Duncan, S. Broadrib. A. Finkelstein. Jock Bruce and "The Masked Yodeller," with Mr. Kirk Burnnand at the piano.
