OBITUARY.

WELL-KNOWN FARMER. MR EDWARD ALLEN. One of the oldest farmers in the Waikato, Mr. Edward Allen, of Cambridge, has died at his residence, 8, Owen's Road, Epsom, in his ninetieth year. His farm at Pukekura, on the opposite side of the Waikato River to the town, has been noted for more than half a century for prizewinning fat cattle, but about 35 years ago Mr. Allen added dairying. He became one of the founders of the Cambridge Co-operative Dairy Company, of which he was a director for 30 years and chairman during most, of the time. Other organisations with which he was connected were the Cambridge Farmers' Club, of which lie was president until it amalgamated with the Farmers' Union; the Waikato Central A. and P. Association, the Cambridge West School Committee, the Waipa County Council for several years, and the Waikato Hospital Board. His long experience and expert knowledge were also utilised as a valuer for several financial interests in Auckland. Mr. Allen arrived from England by the Black Eagle in 1801, with his pa rents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Allen, of Mount Albert, and assisted on his father's farm until in IS*9 he married a daughter of the late Mr. John Southgate, of Mahurangi, and started on his own account at Cambridge. Mrs. Allen died in 1924, while he was oil a visit to England. There are nine members of the family: Mr. Edward Allen (Auckland), Mr. T. Dane Allen (Devonport), Mr. J. S. Allen (Tirau), Mr. A. L. Allen (Maungatautari), Mr. U. C. Allen (Glen Murray), Mr. C. T. Allen (Okoroire), Mrs. Horace Death (Kawhia), Mrs. G. T\. Fletcher (Asliburton), Mrs. W. L. Tilbrook (London), and ten grandchildren. In 1925 Mr. Allen married the eldest daughter of Mrs. and the late Mr. F. J. Freeman, well known in Hawke s Bay. It was in that year that he retired and came to live in Auckland. For many years Mr. Allen was an office bearer in the Cambridge Methodist Church.
