BROKEN CABLES.
| , ! CAUSED BY EARTHQUAKE ? j STEAMER IRIS IN COOK STRAIT. i _____ (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINOTr -esday. As a result of the grappling operations performed by the cable steamer Iris, ( which was in Cook Strait from Wednesday last until yesterday, a theory has been formed that the numerous breaks in the Cook Strait cables were caused by earthquakes. Considerable portions of, the cables have been found buried under rock and other debris. One of the ship's officers said lie thought some sort of upheaval in Cook Strait was probably responsible for the trouble. i The Iris, in two trips, both of which | were interrupted by severe southerly weather, completed repairs to No. 6 I cable, and located No. 2 cable from Ote- ! rangi Bay to White Bay. This cable has been buoyed until the weather allows it to be repaired. Several breaks were found in this cable. No. 1 cable, also between Otorangi Bay and White Bay, I has yet to be located and repaired. j The Iris will leave to-night or to-mor-row to continue the work. Fifteen miles of cable were taken when Hhe first went to Cook Strait after Easter, and nine miles arc now being ' "iped.
