IRISH GIRL IMMIGRANT.
SLEPT IN BANE ROTUN.JA.
VAIN SEARCH FOR WORK.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday.
A 17-year-old girl was faced with the pangs of hunger and suffered cold and loneliness a few days ago when she became stranded in Hawera, and unable to secure work. For two nights she slept alone in tho band rotunda in King Edward Park, huddled beneath tho light covering of her Overcoat beside the suitcase that contained all her possessions. Her plight was discovered by tho police and a woman charitable aid officer, and after tho girl had spent fouy days resting in Hawera Public Hospital employment was found for her. When the facts became known oilers of work were received from a number of Hawera residents.
The girl is an orphan, and came to New Zealand five months ago through tho Immigration Department from Ireland, and arrived in Hawera, where she had found work as a domestic servant. The lonely immigrant lost Imposition last week, and with courageous cheerfulness slept in the band rotunda by night while by day she sought work as a means of relief for hunger, cold and loneliness. The girl is iiqw quite cheerful and has recovered from the effects of her misadventures.
