CANADIAN TIMBER.
"BEST ON PACIFIC COAST."
BID FOR N.Z, TRADE
PREFERENCE EXPECTED,
The Canadian timber delegation met a representative gathering of Auckland timber -people yesterday afternoon in the Chamber of Commerce rooms and urged that if New Zealand had to import timber Canada might get the order, not Only oh the principle of fostering Empire trade, but because Canadian timber was superior to that which was now imported from the U.S.A. The visitors said tliat cedar was superior to the Californian redwood now' being used in New Zealand,'and as for Douglas .fir it was a well-known fact that the timber grown north of the 49th parallel 'was superior to that grown to the south. It was admitted: that some bastard cedar had been sent to New Zealand and had given the genuine article a bad name,'but the merchants in Canada would see that did not happen again, and they were now grading their timbers specially to suit the New Zealand trade.
Mr. D. L. J. Clayton, of the Kauri Timber Company, who presided, assured the delegation that Auckland merchants wanted to help the Canadians. He pointed out, however, that it was, of course., a matter of price,, and as for. cedar versus redwood, he thought it was a question of educating the users, with whom redwood was popular.
In answer to a question from the chairman, the leader of the delegation, Mr. J. H. McDonald, said the delegation quite expected the New Zealand Government would give Canadian timber preference by means of the Customs tariff.
