BIG SHIPPING CONTRACT.
THE SEAMEN'S PROTEST. FURTHER TELEGRAMS. The Merchant' Service Guild, the Seamen's Union, and the Marine Engineers' Institute are continuing their protests against th® action of the Government in letting a contract to an Australian shipping company for the carriage of a large shipment of Newcastle coal to New Zealand ports. As reported in last evening's issue, a second telegram was received from the Prime Minister, Mr. Coates, at noon yesterday. Yesterday afternoon a third telegram was sent from Auckland, suggesting that in view of the present widespread unemployment the Government's chief consideration should be to provide work for New Zealanders, and pointing out that the contract would employ four ships and 150 men for nearly four months at the cost of the difference between the tenders.
