TROUBLE IN SAMOA.
In your issue of February 13, Mr. ft t.i Nelson states that I said "it is well known'in the Islands that tlile real cause of the unrest, was the ambitions of a small coterie who lad, as their slogan 'Samoa for the Sampans,' api, who resented their dreams of kingship being ' disturbed by New Zealand taking over the government of the Islands." This statement, although quoted as from me, was not Bade, by me. When I was interviewed bj tbe ' Dominion" representative, I did not give aay views at all as to the cause of the unrest ud refused to enter into the matter. All I gate j was the improvement executed by the Public Works Department with regard to the deasli- a ness of the Samoans. I did not state that the ,1 Mau had caused the Samoans to be unnaturally v unclean. J. VKVRKTH" .J!
