LOCAL BODIES.

ONE TREE HILL. Tin; sound position of the One Tree Hill Road Board was shown last evening, when the clerk, Mr. A. Leese, submitted the statement of accounts for the ten months ended January 31, 1928. An estimated credit balance of £208 13/3 was shown. This was considered satisfactory, especially in view of the number of extensive works, not provided fon in the original estimates, which had Ween tarried out during the year. However, it was pointed out that no works of any magnitude could be undertaken until the end of the present financial year.

After allowing for receipts for crossings and contributions, etc., £516, the allocation tor Public Works, £8500, had been practically all spent, but certain additional works were authorised during the year, which were not originally provided for, notably storm-water drains in Market Road area and extension to the tunnel drain, £880, footpaths at Penrose, Green Lane, etc., £1171., and levelling for lawns, £304. A further sum of £2500 is required to complete the work in hand to March 31. and sufficient funde would be available for this purpose.

TAKAPUNA COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council was held last evening, there being a full attendance, with the exception of Mr. J. (Juinevan. No Water.—A deputation representing the ratepayers in Stanley Avenue, waited on the council to say that owing to the prolonged dry spell they were without water. They asked that relief should be given. It was decided that water be supplied by meter, subject to certain conditions.

Hoarding.—Further discussion took place concerning the matter of hoardings. The Legal and Finance Committee were instructed to report on the existing bylaw, and it was suggested that an amendment be drafted in order to make the by-law conform with a new policy, as suggested by Mr. A. M. Gould. In. the meantime all applications will be declined. Lakeside Properties Again.—A protest against the payment of rates on a property which comes under the Health Department's restrictions concerning building \vithin the lake watershed was received. It was decided to reply that the council is unable to say whether a building permit can be granted until application is made, and that the council ha* no .power to make an allowance regarding the payment of rates. A Drinking Fountain.—A recommendation from the Works Committee that a pedestal drinking fountain be erected at the foot of Milford Road, when the water reticulation work is in progress was adopted. Blasting.—Letters were received from two Milford ratepayers, drawing the council's attention to the alleged danger and inconvenience caused through blasting operations at the Milford storage culvert. Sherriff's Hill Improvements.—The Auckland Automobile Association wrote, asking if improvements were contemplated at Sherriff's Hill, just beyond the new bridge. Milford Outfall. —The engineer was instructed to bring down plans of the Milford outfall sewer to the next meeting of the Works Committee. Bayswater fire Bell. —Having consulted With the Bayswater branch of the fire brigade, Mr. A. H. Wilkie wrote, recommending that the proposed fire bell «t Bayswater should be erected above the fire alarm box opposite Fevjr's Store. It was decided to reply that the matter is still under consideration. A Gift Appreciated.—The council decided to place on record its appreciation of the Devonport Steam Ferry Company's gift of a jazz building on the council's reserve at Milford. Tour of Inspection.—A tour of inspection will be made by the council on Saturday next. BeacJi Chairs.—An application for permission to hire out deck chairs on Milford Beach was granted, subject to the approval of the Parks Committee.

FRANKLIN COUNTY COUNCIL.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, this day. The Franklin County Council met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. H. Wilcox, presiding. .• The Public Works Department advised that votes on the supplementary estimates fpr 1927-28, £100 for Johnson and Jacob's Road and £200 for Nairn's Access Road, would be issued without being made a charge on the council'# allocation. The medical, officer of heajth, Auckland, forwarded correspondence in relation to an alleged nuisance at Pokeno, caused, by Mr. J. Dean's flax mill. A sub-commit-tee, consisting of the chairman (Mr. Wilcox), Messrs. H. P. Garland, H. J. Flay •and the engineer, is to inspect the creek. The committee was given full power in the matter. The council decided to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for its sanction to the raising of - £200 for the Mauku Creek to Patumalioe drainage; £400 for Pilgrims' Road, Mauku; £1500 for the erection of a public hall at Pokeno; £400 for Peach Hill Road, Ramararria; £500 for Pollok wharf; £1000, being ten per cent on the Awhitu roads loan of £10,000; applications are alsobeing compiled for the Loans Board's sanction for ten other special rating area loans, and they are to be forwarded as soon as possible. It was reported that arrangements had almost been completed in connection with the following loans: —Dazeley's Road, Puni, £250; Ostrich Jload, Patumalioe, £1400; Roger's Road, Puni, £350; Waiau Pa, Mackenzie's Road. .£1250; Kahawai Parish Road, £20CC; Maioro School Road, £'200, and Hull's, McXaughton's and Lewis ltoads, £31C0.

Relative to some improved method of road surfacing being adopted, the engineer reported that owing to the present out-of-shape and ungraded conditions of the county roads, the cost of arty improved emtacing would be heavy. He estimated that betore any tar-sealing work could be i undertaken, it would cost about £2000 | per mile to put the roads in order, while bituminous concrete, liotmix, 12ft wide, would cost another £3200 per mile; bituminous penetrated macadam road, £2112 I?'™!'' a " ( bituminous surface sealing £704 per mile He stated it was quite obvious that older county roads could not be surface treated in their present condition, and until the big expenditure could be met the present methods would have to be adhered to. The report added that preliminary proposals for the expenditure of loan money had been forwarded to the Loans Board for approval. In connection with the proposed loan of £7000 for forming and shelling roads at Awhitu prelim-1 inary proposals had been submitted to the Loans Board, while several proposals had been placed before the Public Works Department for censideration and approval in Connection with the expenditure of gin all Government grants. The tender of Aleeers*. Burneide Brothers* of Papatoetoe, £355 8/0, for carting 1777 cubic yards of sea shell from Gordons Road, Waipipi, to the Waiuku to Mannkau Heads Road, had been accepted.
