BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Birkenhcrtcl Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. E. O. Skeates, presided. Motor Car Licenses. —The town clerk intimated that he had forwarded copies of the Birkenhead borough by-law and the legal opinion, under which the licenses were issued by the council, to the Motor Omnibus. Licensing Authority, which was investigating complaints that motor cars were running in opposition to the two services in Birkenhead now operating tinder license of the No. 1 Licensing xVuthority, which services were now under the jurisdiction of No. 2 Licensing Authority. The Mayor said the licenses to the two motor cars to run an omnibus service were granted under the Birkenhead borough' by-law, and as the position was understood by the Birkenhead Council, the No. . 2 Licensing Authority. had no jurisdiction in regard thereto. The time-tables, which provide for n, service on weekdays and Sunday eventngs, were approved, Messrs. Moller and Jasper dissenting. The Mayor explained that on Sundays and holidays the motor cars would be free to ply as taxis, providing licenses for such were also taken oift. Water Supply.—lt was intimated that the level of Lake Takapuna was five inches above high-tide mark, or five inches lower than a fortnight ago. I'ire Protection.— It wns resolved to reply to the Birkenhead Ratepayers' Association. that the uuestiou of fire-fighting equipment would be gone into when considering the estimates. Municipal Conference.—Mr. C.'E. Campwhs deputed to represent the council nl the New Zealand Municipal Conference at Nelson. r , Septic Tank.—Tim medical officer of health pointed out that, in respect to the proposed septic tank on a section at the corner of Onewa and Hauraki Koads, the nature of the subsoil was not suitable for the disposal of septic tank etllucnt, and the application should therefore be refused.
