SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A very pleasant evening was spent at "Bella Vista," Symonds Street, on Tuesday evening when Miss Johnson invited her and several visitors to say farewell to Mrs. Ormsby Jones and her sister, Mrs. Clarke, who arc returning to their home in Wellington after a stay of two months in this idty. Music and other items of entertainment, including an excellent supper, were fully appreciated and a universal wish for the speedy return of the parting guests, who had endeared themselves to all, was fully expressed.

A most enjoyable annual "At Home" was held yesterday afternoon at the Remuera Lawn Tennis Club, Market Road. Progressive tennis was played. Among those present were: Mts. Scott - Watson,- Mrs. L. Robson, Mrs. Cols on, Mrs. Harrowell, Mrs. Hickson, Mrs. K. Griffiths, Mrs. A. Marshall, Mrs. E. Bartleet, Mrs. T. Philcox, Mrs. B. Jetferson, Mrs. Lawrence Taylor, Mrs. Selwyn Robinson, Mrs. Pope, Mass Sturt, Miss Sloman, TTioral CTerk, Miss Marjorie Stewart, Cox, Miae Mickey Fexgnsao, JCm Millie

Rowlings, Miss Jean Macindoe, Miss Leslie Robertson, Miss Jean Gordon, Miss Marian -Brigham and Miss Moiiie Hunt.

Miss Minnie F. White and Miss Ida G. Eise were hostesses at an informal little gathering whieh took place in Miss White's studio, "V ictoria Arcade, yesterday morning. Its purpose was to farewell Mr. and Mrs W. Robert Johnson, who are shortly returning to Australia. Mr. Johnson is a New Zealander bv birth, and has made a name for himsell by his paintings in Australia. During his tour through New Zealand he done a number of brilliant pictures, all of which are cm private view at Miss White's studio. They are pictures of New Zealand in summer, with the blue haze of bush smoke lying low, and gnarled pohutukawas shedding bloodstained stamens on to the sand beneath. Mr. Johnson intends to take all his pictures back to Australia with him, and the "private view" is simply that art lovers may enjoy his work. During the morning, tea served and a most enjoyable time spent. Amongst those present were: Mrs. W. Robert Johnson, Mrs. Grace Butler, Mrs. Howard, Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Gash, Mrs. Alice Whyte. The present spell of hot weather did not deter a fashionable and well dressed audience attending the opening last evening of "Tip Toes" at His Majesty's Theatre.
