EASTERLY GALE.
TELEGRAPH LINES DAMAGED.
The change of the wind to the eastward brought a change in the weather yesterday throughout the Auckland Province. "In the Auckland Peninsula a heavy gale was experienced overnight, but the interruption to the telegraphic communication through damage to the wires has prevented details of northern conditions being received in the city. Intermittent showers fell in Auckland during the night, and to-day very boisterous weather was reported along the East Coast. The small steamer Tiroa, which sailed for Gisborne at 8 p.m. yesterday, returned to port this morning, and it is thought that the sailing vessels, which sailed earlier in the week, are sheltering at friendly havens in the Gulf.
Though the Rtorm has not been felt severely in Auckland, the rain has caused delay in the loading and discharging of steamers at the wharves and some postponements in the departure times are expected in consequence. The Union Company announced that the Tofua will not sail for the Eastern Pacific until to-mor-row night.
