BOROUGH MEETINGS.

DEVONPORT.

The ordinary meeting of the Devonport Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present: Messrs J. C. Macky (Mayor), M. Niccol, E. W. Alison, O. Mays, R. H. Duder, J. Dunning, W. Handley and G. A. Creeth. A considerable amount of routine business was dealt with.

Loan.—lt was resolved on the motion of the Mayor to advertise for tenders for a loan of £10,000, in accordance with the resolution passed at the meeting of ratepayers on the <:nd inst.

Roads.—The Foreman of Works recommended the widening of Victoria Road, and the cutting back of the bank, so as to render the road a safer one coming down to Hartley's corner. The recommendation was referred to the Streets and Works Committee to report on.

Tree Planting.—The tree planting committee reported that Mr Skeates had collected £17 13/6 for planting trees in Calliope Rd. The Committee had decided that 90 trees be planted on the sides of the road, the trees to include oak, Spanish chestnut, Oriental plane, sycamore, silver beech, purlrl, pittosporum, pepper tree, totara and olive. The report was adopted. It was stated that the Council would contribute a sum equal to that collected by Mr Skeates for tree planting. On the motion of Mr Mays it was resolved to record the Council's appreciation of the public spirit shown by Mr Skeates, and the other residents who had contributed to the fund. The Committee also recommended that trees be planted from Tainul Road to Narrow Neck, and also that the Council plant a hedge of suitable shrubs in front of the scoria pit. The proposal to plant In front of the scoria pit caused discussion, Crs. Alison, Mays1 and Niccol opposing the suggestion as unnecessary. They objected to such work being proceeded with without the authority of the Council. The 'proposal of the Committee was vetoed by a majority of the Council. It was decided to plant deciduous and assorted trees from the Narrow Neck to the Lake Road. It was decided to cut down the balance of the pinus insignis at Melrose corner.
