Extraordinary Affair at Granamstown.
SINGULAR CONDUCT OF AN UN
KNOWN MAN
GRAHAMSTOWN, this day. SHORTLY before one o'clock this morning Thomas Millet arrived in Grahnmstown from Tararu aud informed Constable McManus, who was on duty, that a man hud been drowned at Tararu, near the old wharf. From our informants statement it appears that his attention was attracted towards some cows grazing on the Hat, because he observed a man standing close by them. Thinking tho man meant to do the animals sonic mischief Miller proceeded to tho spot where he was standing, but before he reached him the man ran away, Millet gave cbaso aud succeeded in getting within twenty yards of the fugitive when he turned round und threatened to stab him if he came nearer having apparently n knife in his hand. Mr (iodkin, hotel-keeper, then appeared and I gave chase. After a long run Uodkiu threatened to shoot the man if he did'ntstop, but the latter took no notice of the threat and rau headlong into the tide. A boat was got out in the hope of effecting a rescue, but after an hour's search the party returned and Millet came into town as before stated to inform the police. None of the party could recognise the man, who at the time appeared perfectly sober, but from his looks and words they considered him to have been insane. The case was reported to the police to make enquiries. FATAL ACCIDENT AT BAGNALL'S MILL.
