The Evening Star:

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1870.

Now that we may regard the return of the Honorable the Colonial Treasurer as virtually secured for City East, we would again urge that similar steps should at once be taken to have his Honor the Superintendent one of the representatives of City West. The zeal that Mr. Gillies has shown for the interests of Auckland, not only on the floor of the House' but in his Provincial administration, demands that the indignity should not be put upon him of banishment to the outskirts of the province. There can be no doubt that any one of the electorates might be proud of such a representative, and perhaps there is not one of them but would gladly commit its interests to his hands ; but as there is an honor in representing a city constituency we trust - that ho time will be lost in originating a requisition to Mr. Gillies from City West. The astonishing success that has attended the requisition to Mr. Vogel shows that brains and influence are appreciated ; and a similar result, we feel assured, would attend a movement in favor of the Superintendent. This is not a ease in which personal feelings should be allowed to operate. Auckland requires men that can speak with the voice of Auckland, and command such an influence as this city should have on tho decision of questions affecting the interests of the colony; and in such circumstances smaller men should really stand, aside and give place to those who take the foremost ranks in debate. A man who subordinates public interests to private friendships in such a case, is a traitor to the city and the."province;- and any proposal for conferring a seat on a man because he is a " good sort of fellow," in preference to the election of intellect, and position, and influence, should be scouted by all good men. Auckland requires that her opinions should be respected in the House, and we trust that those who have so successfully moved for the election of Mr. Vogel, will supplement the good work by securing in the neighbouring constituency the return of Mr, Gillies.

There was a painful exhibition in the Police Court to-day- " A woman with the former vestiges of former, ladylike respectability,: the keeper of aJ.liouse- of ill fame, appeared, together witli;her little daughter, a nice looking child of thirteen, to prove a case "of. assault against one'of her' wretched boarders. The details wrung from the lips of the child by cross-examination, as to the habits of her mother, were such as to force the question on attention, is there no way of rescuing a poor child of tender years and her little sisters from the contamination of such scenes ?
