THE PROPOSED FORCE FOR SERVICE IN NEW ZEALAND.
An idea has been for some time prevalent in military circles that arrangements were being made for raising a force in this country for the service of the Colony of New Zealand. It was certainly a part of the? missioi of the Colonial Commissioners (Dr. Featherstone and Mr. Dillon Bell), to make arrangements for organising snch a force should they deem it practicable; and those gentlemen, whose services on behalf of the colony have been most unremitting, have been in communication with the authorities at head-quarters on the subject. The Duke of Cambridge promised to render every assistance to facilitate the volunteering of officers for New Zealand, but an insuperable difficulty seems to have presented itself as to the means of securing the service of levies made here _on arrival on the other side. This and other difficulties which have paesented themselves havo caused the Commissioners, after mature deliberation, to decide on not raising a force in England for service in New Zealand. —English Paper.
