""Auckland, April3o. «Sir,-rl have the honor to request that you will bring under the notice of the members of the City Board of Commissioners the following scheme, which may possibly serve to abate in some measure the nuisance existing at. the, embouchure of the main sewer: —

" The Government will provide a barge, and make arrangements to tow it out into deep water beyond the iufluence of tides affecting the harbour, provided the Board will engage men to fill into the barge at proper times the mud now lying at the mouth of the sewer from which the exhalations rise, _\

" The City Board apparently have not the powers necessary to deal with this matter effectively, and the Provincial Government has not at its disposal funds,for permanent operations, but both being anxious to do what is possible for the relief of the citizens from the risk and annoyance caused by this nuisance, may thus by co-operation effect a temporary abatement.
