The following letter from W. Montgomery, Esq., M.H.R., was received re sito of new Public Buildings": — "Wellington 27 August, 1877. ,( Dear Sir, I had the honor to acknowledge (by telegraph) receipt of your letter of the 21 st inst., in which you inform me that the Council unanimously disapproved of the site on which the Road Board office stands being taken for the proposed new Government Buildings. The resolution (copy of which you have furnished to me) stating that the best site for the new buildings is that first suggested by the Council, being part of Reserve 1901, will have my best attention. I shall inform the Minister of Works that the wish of the Council is that, should a change from the present site be determined upon, the new buildings should be erected upon part of the Reserve 1901.

" I have to state that a petition wns forwarded to me for presentation to the Minister of Works praying that, should a change of site be deemed necessary, the Road Board Office site should be chosen. That petition I presented to tho Minister, as I was in duty bound, but I beg to state that I did not express any opinion respecting the matter. I hope the Council and also the inhabitants will clearly understand that, in a question such as this, when there is a difference of opinion among my constituents respecting a purely loealmalter I will feel it my duty to abstain from taking one side. Indeed I think the important question is to get the grant necessary for defraying the costof the buildings, leaving the question of site to be determined afterwards.

I shall therefore urge the Minister to place a sufficient sum on the Supplementary Estimates ; feeling assured that the Borough Council will be consulted before any site be determined on, if a change be deemed necessary.

" I can say that neither Mr Bowen nor the Minister of Works has any ieanine: one way or the other.

'• I have seen the Colonial Secretiuy again respecting the Reserves, the Commission rs of Crown Land in Canterbury has been asked to supply.further information respecting them, and when this is obtained I will have another interview and urge the necessity of a speedy corncompliance with the wishes of the Council. ■' If there is anything in which I can further the interests of the town please advise me. " I have the honor to be, " Dear Sir, " Your obedient servant, f( "W. Montgomery. " A. J. M'Gregor, "Town Clerk, "Akaroa."
