CHOLERA AND SMALL-POX AT SUVA.

We are indebted to Mr. Dodd for the loan of Fijian and Suva newspapers which contain accounts of the outbreak of cholera and sraal'.-pox nt those Islands. The Suva Times saj-d :— " The ship Poonah arrived on mono*/, June 18, from Calcutta, with 495 souls on board, exclusivo of the captain, officers, and crew. There have been twenty-six deaths from the time of departure until that of arrival, the majority of which have been from cholera. Five cases of small-pox are reported, but no deaths have occurred from that disease. One of the officers, the engineer, died from cholera. As a matter of course, the vessel is in quarantine, and the present proposal of the Government is, that Bhe shall proceed to Nukalan, and there discharge her passengers and stores, leaving the Colony without having obtained pratique, i The Fiji Times, of July 11th, reports:— i" There has" been a. fresh outbreak of disjease'amongst the Indian immigrants per Poonab, and one death has taken pluco

Bincc her arrival. On the 29th June, four white men and three lascars belonging to the crew stole one of the ship's boats and absconded. Active measures for their capture were at once adopted, and they were secured the following day at noon. They were returned to the vessel, and have since been placed on the Quarantine Island, where they will no doubt be carefully watched until the vessel takes her departure." • A letter, dated Suva, 9th July, says, regarding the outbreak of cholera among the Poonah's immigrants :— " Twenty-three persons have 'died in one day. The Har-bour-master went out to bring the vessel Inf and he- has not been" seen since. His Wife and family are in great trouble. The men who ran off fronrthe ship were captured, v but there were about 200 natives with them at the time. Symptoms of the ' disease have begun to show, and the worst * is feared for both races. Many are thin& ing of clearing out." The writer adds that' trade at present is dull, and many carpenters are going about seeking employment.
