MEMORIAL PROPOSED
WORK OF MR E. A. M. LEAVER FOR NORTH BEACH
In suggesting at a meeting of the North Beach Progress League last evening that the league initiate a scheme for the erection of a suitable memorial in North Beach to Mr E. A. M. Leaver, Mr R. D. Martin said that Mr Leaver had given more than 25 years of service in the interests of the borough. In addition to his long service as councillor and two terms as Mayor, he had been associated with practically every sports body in the borough. His services have never been
publicly recognised during his life, and he thought it fitting that the league with which Mr Leaver had been associated for mole than 25 years should take the initiative in the erection of a suitable memorial. Mr J. O’Connell said he thought xt a question for the whole borough to decide, as Mr Leaver’s long years of 1 service had been in the interests of the whole of New Brighton. “I claim that it should be definitely a North Beach memorial,” said Mr L. R. Moore. “The borough can erect a larger one if it wants to.” It was decided that the league grant £5 towards the cost of erecting a suitable memorial at the Bowhill road entrance to the Rawhiti Domain in
memory of Mr Leaver, and that Messrs D. N. Scott, L. R. Moore, J. Kelly, R. D. Martin (secretary), and Mesdames E. Brownrigg, E. H. Williams, and H. R. Macdonald be a committee to consider ways and means. The proposed memorial is two stone pillars and a stone fence in front of I the entrance to the Rawhiti Domain, in Bowhill road, opposite Tonks street. A resolution was carried expressing sympathy with' Miss Irene Leaver in the death of her father, and expressing regret at the great loss the league had differed.
