RANGIORA HIGH SCHOOL.

The distribution of awards and exhibition of maps and work dene by the pupils of the Raneiora High School, of which Mr T. W. Rowe, M.A., ia principal and Miss Williams, M.A., is assistant, took place yesterday There were present Mr G. J. Leech, Chairman, and Mr E. R. Good, Mayor, representing the Governors, and a number of ladies and gentlemen. The Mayor, in opening the proceedings, referred to the progress of the school and its financial position, which he regretted had been weakened by reason of the endowment reserve being let below its former rent. He urged on those present to support the school with their influence. Addressing the pupils, he gave them some good advice and wished them every happiness -during the vacation. Recitations were given—" The Septem>»i Gale," F. Banks ; " The Leak in.the Dyke,' Mary Cunningham; "I want to fly," W. C. Wilson; " Lictle Alex." J. S. Daniell; " Henry of Navarre," Edith Rogers ; " Exhibition Day," Wiiliam Efford. Mr Rowe, Principal, presented a report, which stated the school contained 30 pupils, 15 in the upper room in his sole charge, and 15 in the lower room under Miss Williams. The result of the examination gave a highei percentage of marks. The years 1889-9 C were remarkable for an influx of new scholars, which last year caused an unevenness in the general standard of excellence. Thi3 year the number of new pupib was small, and moat of them had been hard-working scholars. There wer« in the upper room two divisions, Forms IV. and 111. ; both have passed tht accidence and syntax in Latin grammar, but the upper division had been translating rather harder English sentences into Latin. The translation and grammar was w«ll done by both, but the composition in the lowei division was the best. In Form UL the pupils all began Latin this year and were able to read simplified selections, and their sentences were fairly well translated. Another pupil learning Latin in the upper room had done welL In the lower room the divisions were examined in elementary Latin, and did fairly well. In arithmetic, Form IV. did excellently with work harder than those of the pupils oi similar age at other schools. Form lIL, whose papers included the whole range oi the subject, were equally good. 11., on the whole, made good papers on fractions, decimals, practice and problems. Form L, in simple rules to fractions and weights and measures, was rather uneven, but satisfactory. In Euclid the results varied from very good to inferior. Algebra to simple equations, the papers were well done. In.English the upper room grammai paper was well done ; the lower room di<] elementary work up to parsing in a satisfactory manner. English literature was dont by eight, and French by seven in the uppei room, whose work was fairly good. In physics the upper room did well, and physiology—a favourit: subject in the upper room —? ww well done. The lower room hac been examined orally in reading and poetry as well as dictation and spelling, anc acquitted themselves satisfactorily, Mr G. J. The visitors were invited to afternooi tea by Mrs Rowe, and had an opportunity of inspecting several specimens' of hand writing, and some well drawn and niceb coloured maps. The Chairman of the Boar< of Governors announced that next year h should offer a special prize for penmanship.
