OBITUARY.

MR. T. G. RUSSELL.Further particulars concerning the life and career of "Mr. Thomas Gregory Russell, whose death occurred in Christchurch, have come to hand. lie was well known throughout New Zealand for his high standing in the legal' profession, for his business ability and for the valuable services rendered by the legal and mercantile publications he directed.

Mr. Russell was born in Colchester, Essex, and came to New Zealand at an early age. He spent his early years in North Canterbury, practising as ah accountant. While there lie studied and qualified as a barrister and solicitor, being admitted to the Bar in 1884. Until 1920 he carried on a most successful legal practice, being retained in many of the more important cases, both civil and criminal, in Canterbury. In 1908 he took Mr. A. H. Anthony into partnership, and the firm of Russell and Anthony was one of the best known in the province.

In addition to liis legal work, Mr. Russell . was extensively interested in commercial undertakings. Ho was managing director 6f the Trade Auxiliary Company of New Zealand, Ltd., publishers of the "Mercantile Gazette," for which Mr. Russell himself acted as managing editor.' He founded the "Gazette Law Reports," which has,been of considerable service to the profession, and the thirty years' digest of • tire reports will remain as a reminder of his excellent work! He was also proprietor of the "Magistrate's Court Reports." He produced the first issue of the "Rules and Regulations Under the New Zealand Statutes." His book "Commercial Law in New Zealand" was used as a text-book in New Zealand universities for many years. Mr. Russell was also managing director of Benjamins, Ltd., an importing company. In the early days of motoring Mr. Russell was an ardent motorist. He was a brother of the Hon. G. W. Russell agd is survived by a widow, who - was the younger daughter of the late Professor F. D. Brown, of Auckland University, two daughters, Mrs. W. O'Callaghan, of Hawera, and Mrs. Rita Russell, of Hertfordshire, and one soil", Mr. C. R. Russell, of Chris tchurch.
