July I], M-Wellington R.C. Winter. August 14, 16, IS-C.J.C. Grand National. The Hon. J. IX Ormond has six representatives in the New Zealand Cup, all of his own breeding. Grand Rapids is engaged in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. Cicero, who had not raced since being beaten by Val dOr in the Eclipse Stakes last July, made his re-appearance in public on April 20th. He ran in the Newmarket Biennial Stakes, one mile unci a-half, and, carrying lOst, and starting at 5 to 1 on, won as he liked in'2rain 32 1 ssec ( from his solitary opponent, Shilfa.

Among Noctuifonn's probable opponents in the Ascot Gold Cup, two miles and a-half, are such well-performed horses as Pretty Polly, Cicero, Challacombe, Finasseur and Great Scott. Should Noctuiform's condition be forward enough to allow of his starting, the New Zealander will have a stiff contract before him to win.

The four-year-old Flying Fox stallion, Adam, who was recently sold by Mr Blanc for 12,000 guineas, goes to America.

Baritone changed hands during the progress of the Great Northern Steeplechase Meeting, being purchased by Mr W, C. Morgan for 175 guineas.

Aka Aka and Mocassin are reported to have gone amiss while contesting at the Auckland Meeting.

The Grand Prix de Paris has been won by a French-bred horse for the past twenty years. Minting, in 1890, was the last English-bred horse enrolled on the list of winners, although many attempts have been made to win the Grand Prize. This year's event has fallen to the worthy son of the New Zealand-bred horse Carbine, to wit, Spearmint, who is also a grandson of Minting.

Convoy has changed ownership, £100 being received by Mr J. Buckley for the Vanguard gelding.

Spearmint's future engagements comprise the Sandringham Stakes, City of London, Breeders Foal Plate, Great Yorkshire Stakes, Newmarket Great Foal Stakes and Gat wick Stakes.

Mr E. Stevenson, of Palmerston North, shipped a team of horses to Melbourne, from Wellington, last week. The consignment included Miss King, Nonette, Windy, Contour, Lionheart, Liquid Air, Sea Moon, Black Diamond, a. filly by Goodwood--

Nantes, and a gelding by Leolantis. Kuroki was on board the same steamer. Jockeys J. Price, W. Young, F. Lind, S. Reid and A. Olliver, and trainer J. Gravestock, of Clareville, were also on board. Miss King will be raced in the big jumping events. It is reported that Mr Stevenson's team is to be put on the market.

From New Plymouth comes the news of the death of Mr I). C. O'Brien's brood mare Grafin. She was the dam of Heroism, Grenade and Heriot, who are all sired by Graf ton. Subscription lists have been opened up in Auckland, on behalf of the widow and family of the late Samuel Fergus.

Spearmint, by winning the English Derby and Grand Prix de Paris, landed a rare " double," and one that has rarely been accomplished. Indeed, there are only three others —Gladiator, Cremorne and Kisber — that have won these two races.

A noticeable feature in this year's New Zealand Cup is that the Yaldhurst stable has not a single nomination.

Pretty Polly, starting at 1000 to 35 on, won the March Stakes at Newmarket on 3rd May.

Additional New Zealand nominations for Australian events include Ballarat and Multifid for the Epsom Handicap, and Multifid for the Metropolitan Handicap.
