For a colt that in his sapling- season had the reputation of being cranky. Diamond Jubilee has done remarkably well. Beginning the present sea- j son by cap Luring the Tv, o Thousand Guinea?, he won the Newmarket Stakes, then the Berby, later on the Eclipse Stakes, and now ihe St. Leger; and the only _ check to his triumphal progress was when Merry Gal beat him in the" Princess of "Wales Stakes. This one defeat probably takes £2000 or £3000 off of Diamond Jumiee"s selling value. People argue that if quite first-class, he would have 'been able to concede the filly 201b. As to that, nobody can go farther than an opinion. The best borse that ever lived would be 'beaten if called upon to concede 201b to another of the same age only 101b inferior. ,'lwenty pounds is a lot, and it is not so much a question of what the conceder can do as what the recaiver can do. Possibly Ormonde and th? few wilier undefeated ones never had to meet a Merry Gal- on such terms. Bowever. there is no call to apologise for Diamond Jubilee or explain away anything in bis career. With all his shortcoming?, the Prince-s colt is to-day the champion of England, and an undoubted champion. As to the placed horses in this Leger : Elopement last season started four times, winning the ■Windsor Ca.'ile Stakes, Rurstbourne Stakes, and the Clearwell Slakes. This year he was unplaced in the Two Thousand Guineas, and rlso in the Stewards' Cup at the Goodwood August meeting. Condon did not run as a two-year-old, but last July he finished s-e-cond to the American horse Caiman in the Suffield Park Stakes. _ Last year the Leger (resulted in an easy win for the sensational Flying Fox; the year before it ysps a boil- ' i ver, Wildf owler unexpectedly clef eating Jedtlah; in 1C97 the Irish wonder, Galtee More, :uirtoxe:l the stake ; and one year earlier we had Persimmon winning for his popular royal owner. The greatest turn up in recant year= Was in 1E94. when Throstle, starting at 50 lo 1, beat the Derby winner Ladap. They >lo lay long prices on this Leger.
