THE A.J.C. MEETING.
i'he complete results of this meeting are now before xis. A rather curious feature about it is that Maltster, winner of the 'Derby, did not, so far as we know, have a second try at the meeting. Lancaster is in Ihe same predicament. He won the Trial Stakes, and then dropped out— at any rate we have no further mention of him. Ampier's case is precisely f-imilar, He won the Epsom Handicap, and apparently ran no more. His win, by the way, must have been a great surprise to some persons. Late Australian papers, of date just prior to the 'opening of the meeting, agreed in their reports us to disappointing gallops on Ampier's part at Randwick. This is from the leading Sydney paper: "If Ampier wins the Epson) Handicap after his two sorry exhibitions against Glenore and Allinqa, his trainer mutt be very 'Jeep. On Saturday Glenore beat him pointless over a mile, but the Victorian's poor effort was excusable on the ground that he carried a very heavy weight. It is Faid he jairied 9sfc. But when he met Allinga on .Puesdav, Ampier was ridden by Hickey, a jad weighing a little over 6st in a saddle ttiat looked under 101b weight. Allinga. #ho was ridden by the light weight. E. deal. x ,ook Ampier along at a rare bat, and bofoie
they had turned for home it was plainly evident that fho had him in trouble : but she waited with him until about 50yris lrom the po=.t, when she came away fiom him a^ if he were standing still. The Ringer was deputed to como along the la^t six furlongs with them in order to a B -ure the gallop being truly run; but Allinga beat him at (he fznifcli, and did the best Epsom gallop of the season — aot. of course, the feate^t time go, but the best gallop. The woy in which s-he did it, and the horses she beat, madp it the be»t. Thio filly has done a splendid preparation, and beinc; a quick beginner, must be very dangerous in the Epsom." Neither Glenore nor All'ng.i is mentioned in the report of the lace. Ihey started, and -criaingly were never near ihp front. The confistent performer of the meeting wa= Paul Pt-y. This aged Lnchiel gelding "won all the open v eighl-f or-agc race, and when wanted, as in ihe Craven Plate, he nude fa&t time. H<> could not, howevei. win the Metropolitan.
