St. Blaise was bred by his owner, and ran in that nobleman's name last season. Hi» performances were not quite tip-top, and he must have done some good trials this spring to have «ome to such short odds as were called out here the day before the race, when the betting was as follows: —

St. Blaise last year won the Bibury Biennial Stakes of 385 soys, beating four others ; walked over for the Stockbridge Troy Stakes of 475 eova ; ran second in the Hurstbourne Stakes of 1375 BOV3, won by Macheath, with Adriana third, Tyndrum last ; made a dead-heat with Elzevir in the Goodwood Molecomb Stakes, of 1450 soys, and divided the stake ; unplaced in the Dewhurst Plate, of 1557 soys (9st 121b), won by Ladislaa (Bst 9lb), GoMfield (Sst 131b) second, Acrostic (Bst 91b) third ; won the Newmarket Troy Stakes, of 575 soys, beating four others. He was ridden last season by T. Cannon, and was trained privately in Dorsetshire by H. Percy, trainer for Lord Alington and Sir F. Johnstone. This spring, however, he joined Lord Alington's string of horses, under J. Porter's charge, at Kingsclerc, Hampshire. In commenting on the victory of St. Blaise iv the Newmarket Troy Stakes, the Sportsman said: — "He is a nice colt, and said to be a thorough -stayer ; but though well entitled to be included in the category of useful ones, we think he ia a remove from Derby form in a season when our juveniles are confessedly above the average." A couple of months ago the same paper said:— "St. Blaise, we all know, displayed some form as a two-year-old. He is a.verythick and powerful colt, with a deep body. He has grown nearly one inch and a-half in height since we saw him in public, and now measures about 15 hands 3£ inches. The back, loins, and quarters of the colt are powerful, and when thoroughly trained he will be a very nice horse, and, we doubt not, a good winner, but he is not one of our particular favourites for either the Two Thousand Guineas or Derby." Of Highland Chief the same paper ssiid last autumn .—". — " Highland Chief was one of the two-yean-old winners, but he was beaten by Keir in the Houghton Stakes, and he need not be thought about in connection with the great race of next season, seeing that he is a roarer, but over short courses he should do well for Lord Ellesmere." This colt last season ran second (Bst 91b) to Songless (Sst lib) in the Newmarket Stud Produce Stakes, of 874 soys. ; won the, Newmarket Exeter Stakes, of 600 bovb, beating six others ; ran third to Rookery and Adriana in a Produce Stakes of 627 soys : Becond (9st) to Macheath (9t,t 31b) in the Middle Park Plate', of 3015 soys ; won the Homebred Sweepstakes, of 400 soys ; and ran second (9st 21b) in the Housrhton Stakes, won by Keir. Galliard will be remembered as having won the Two.Thousand Guinea Stakes a month ago, when Gbldfield finished second, and the Prince third. Last year he won the Chesterfield Stakes, of 1370 soys, at Newmarket, be&ting six others ji w.on the Prince of Wales' Stakes, of 1002 soys, at York, giving weight and a beating to four others ; ran unplaced in the Champagne Stakes, of 1030 soys, at Doncaster, won by Hauteur, Macheath second, Chislehurst third. The Prince unplaced. St. Blaise, Gold field, and The Prince are entered for the Grand Prix de Paris, to be run onSundaynext, while Highland Chief, Galliard, Gcldtield., a.ndjThe Prince are in the St. Leger ; St Blaise is unfortunately not nominated for the great Doncaster race.

Bonnie Jean won last year a Maiden Plate of 195 soys and a Two-year-old Plate if 195 soys, at Epsom ; ran second to The Prince in the Goodwood Bous Memorial Stakes, of 1447 soys, for which there were 10 starters ; unplaced iv the Molecomb Stakes of 1450 soys, for which St. Blaise and Elzwir made a d^ad heat ; won the Newmarke t Prendergast Stakes of 1072 soys ; unplaced iv the Cheveley Stakes of 597 soys (9st lib), won by Pastrycook (Bst 31b), Fred (Sst 31b) second, Splendor (Bst 31b) third. Malibran will be remembered as having run second to Hauteur in the One Thousand Guineas a month ago, when her previous performances were given. Ettarre ran four times last year without winning, hf r best performance being running a good second to Duchess of Cornwall in the Bnck^aham Stakes of 1200 soys at Newmarket.
