LICENSING OF VEHICLES

WARNING BY AUTHORITY PUBLIC WORKS CARRYING [from our owx correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday When applications for licences for carrying material for the Public Works •Department came before the No. 1 licensing authority at Hamilton to-day, Mr. E. J. Phelan, who presided, gave an indication of the procedure followed by the authority. "We communicate with the Public Works Department," stated Mr. Phelan, "and if' it advises that there is work for the trucks, and the men, licences, are granted. Others wise, tho licences, will ue withheld." i- warning to prospective applicants was given - said that public works wfcre now 'at their peak, but that the work could not last forever. It . was. necessary,, to ensure that there was sufficient work for those already licensed, as the' [granting of licences' to extra men would lead to unnecessary, competition and pricecutting. > < V None of the licences would be issued for longer than 12 months, 1 he added. When the work- expired* it would be useless for the men, to. apply for a general goods licence,. More lavourable consideration would be given to applications from men who had been with the Public' Works Department for many

years than to those ..who had entered that employment only since the busy period developed. Applications from the following were held over until a report had been received from the department:—E. Cheadle, Cambridge; T H. Hall, Leamington; A. Thomson, Karapiro; L. Gordon, Te Kainvhata; W. G. Heath, Cambridge; T. L. O'Connor, Ngaruawahia; F. L. Natzke, Cambridgej F. T. H. Skinner, Frankton; H. C. Lough, Karapiro. A decision regarding the application of T. L. Posser. Kimihia, was reserved, and one from C. H. Hansen, Orini, was not allowed. Applications from J. A. Colvin, Cambridge, and H. P. Pogers, Ngaruawahia, were adjourned. An application for renewal of a goods service licence by It. Gubb, Potowaro, was granted, as were applications from the following for amended licences:— W. A. Postlewaight, Taupiri; H. J. Nicol, Te Kowliai; C. Kendall, Hamilton; F. J. Cox, Huntly; W. J. Maisoy, Koromatua; Mclnnes and White, Tauwhare. In the caso of W. and C. Thompson; Te Hoe, R. W. Troughear, Glen Aft'on, and F. J. Cleave, Hamilton. judgment was reserved, while an application from P. Brown, Whitikahu, was refused.

Transfer of licences from J. J. Enwright to W. H. Haggard, Frankton, and from A. McLaren to W. and C. Thompson, Te Hoe, were approved. The application of Buses, Limited, for a passenger service licence for the Hamilton district was adjourned; while two others from the same company for amended licences for passenger services between Hamilton and Pukeniiro and Hamilton and To Aroha wero granted.
