In addition to his two winners in the above, S. Donoghue was success,fuj, on four other occasions, namely, ori Pommern in 1915, Gay Crusader iri 1917, Humorist in 1921 and Captain Cuttle in 1922. This year he was engaged to ride Cameronian's brother Loch i el, who, however, pulled up lame after a gallop last Saturday. Donoghue's son Pat was engaged for Light Sussex.

ORDER OF FAVOURITISM ISSUE REGARDED AS OPEN •EXCEPTIONAL INTEREST There has been exceptional interest in the Derby this year because ':he issue was generally considered unusually open. The French colt Rodosto, who won the first classic of the season, the Two Thousand Guineas, on April 26, arrived in. England last week to contest the Derby but as a result of developing cramp was struck out of the race and taken back to France on Monday. Hyperion, owned by Lord Derby, held the position of favourite. Manitoba, whose sire Manna won in 19l?5, Young Lover, winner of the Newmarket Stakes, li miles, on May 10, and King Salmon, who ran second in both Ihe Two Thousand Guineas and Newmarket Stakes, were also well fancied. King Salmon is a half-brother to the 1930 Derby winner Blenheim. Happy Call, an aptly-named colt by Call Boy from Happy' Girl, find Harinero, a brother to Trigo, winner in 1929, running in the same ownership, were next best supported. Then cam.9 Scarlet Tiger, Gino, Light Sussex, Statesman, Felicitation, Interlace and Raymond. Myosotis was not mentioned in cabled messages of betting last week, but as he won the Derby Trial Stikes on May 20 no doubt he would come into substantial favour. Last .year April tho Fifth won this race as a preludo to his Derby success.

LARGE PRIZE-MONEY

NEARLY £9OOO FOR WINNER BUILT UP BY FORFEITS The prize-money for the Derby is largely built up by forfeits. "When nominations for this year's race closed in November, 1931, the entry list totalled 304. Of this lumber, 117 dropped out at the first forfeit m July, 1932, paying £'s each, a total of £735; 71 paid the second forfeit of £25 each last March, yielding £1775; and 61 paid the third forfeit cf £SO each on Tuesday of last week, making £3050, and giving a grand total in forfeits of £55(50. Twenty-five final acceptors wero left at £IOO each, thus giving £2500 to bo added to the £55(30 forfeit mone.N and the £3OOO from the Jockey Club, making an aggregate of £11,060. Tho breeder of the winner receives £500; the owner of the second horse 10 per cent of the stake, £llO6, and tho owner of tho third horso 5 per cent, £551. This leaves £B9OI for the owner of tho winning horse.
