Tbe annual sporting festival on Epsom Downs commenced on Tuesday, on wiiicli clay five prizes were contested for. O.i Wednesday, besides four other race.s, the Derby Stakes were run for, and carried off by Mr. Bowea' West Australian, Sittingbourne being second, Cineaa third, and Rataplan fourth. The following also ran : — Orestes, Mayor of Hull, Stone Plover, Mr. Sykes, Pharold, Filbert, lonic, Urnbriel, Pharos, Ninny hammer, Cheddar, Prince Leopold, Brocket, Talfourd, Orinoco, Lascellet, Ethelbert, Honey wood, Fionnma»Coull, Rattle, Coomburland Stathesom, Barbatus, Vanderdecken, and Peggy. Bettins; at starting;— 6to 4: agst. West Australian, 5 to 1 agst. Orestes, 6 to I agst. Honeywood, 8 to 1 agst. Sittingbourne, 20 to 1 a<rst. Umbriel, 20 to 1 agst. Pharos, (offered), 25 to 1 agst. An excellent start, all getting off in a cluster, except Coomburland Stathes mon, who was some leng-hs behind. Cheddar and Cineas started in front, but they had scarcely proceeded halt- way up the bill when Umbriel took up the running, with Cheddar, Cineas, Orestes, Ethelbert, Ninnyhammer, and Rattle well up; and directly in their wake were Pharo*, Honeywood, and Filbert; West Australian, with Sittingbourne in close attendance upon him, being next. No material change occurred until I they arrived at the turn into the straight, when Umbriel began to drop off. Rattle immediately went on with the lead, but at the road was passed by Cineas ; and at the same time West Australian, with Sitting bourne at his quarters, was seen to draw forward. At the distance these two singled themselves out, and a very exciting race home ended in favour of. West Australian by a neck. Rataplan, who left the ruck in the last quarter of a mile, and gradually improved his position, finished about half a length behind the third. Honeywood and Rattle were the next two. Barb.itus pulled up lame. Run in 2 minutes 50 seconds. Amount of the stakes. £5425. Jerry Kent was scratched at 10 30 a. m. On Thms day the sport was generally good, hut with the exception of Lard Derby's Dervish winning the Two- Year-Old Stakes, and being backed immediately afterwards at 20 to I for the Derby, '54, there was nothing of importance in the events to affect future interests. On Friday the main feature was the race for the Oiks Stakes, which were won by Mr. Waucliope's Catherine Hayes ? Dove second, f by Don John out of Mi«s Sarah third, and Nicotine fourth. The following also ran ; — Lady Margaret, M ss Tennyson, England's Beauty, Coalition, Koh-i-Noor, Lady Louisa, Mentmore Lass, Exhibition, Mabel! a, Hybla, Mistletoe, The Queen Helena. Betting at starting :— 5 to 4 agst. Catherine Hayes, 2 to 1 against Mistletoe, 7 to 1 agst. Mentmore Lass, 12 to 1 agst. The Queen, 20 to 1 agst. Lady Margaret, 20 to 1 agst. England's Beauty, 40 to 1 agst. Dove. After the usual parade and canter they drew together at the post, and a beautiful start was made at the first signal. Lady Louisa, with Koh-i-noor, Mistletoe, Catherine Hayes, and Miss Sarah filly veil laid up, made the running to the mile-post, where the lead was taken by Mistletoe, Catherine Hayes lying at her quartets on the left, and Koh-i-noor on the right. In going down the hill to Tattenham Comer, Mistletoe began to decline, and at tbe turn she dropped back, leaving the lead with Catherine Hayes, and tbe race from that point was no longer in doubt. At the stand, Dove, who had been lying off, shot up, followed by Miss Sarah filly, Nicotine, and The Queen ; Catherine Hayes, however, maintained her lead to the end, winning easily by a length attd a half; the second beating the third by a length ; a head between third and fourth. The Queen was «nd Mabeila next; the others were very widely scattered. Run in 2 minutes 53 seconds. Amount of tho stakes, £3,800.
