CANDIDATES SELECTED

Two Nationalist candidates for Wellington City seats were announced by th,e .Wellington committee of the National Political Federation today. Mr. H. F.- Toogood will contest the Wellington South seat and Mr. Will J. Mason will- stand in the party's interests :in Wellington Central.

Mr. Toogood was born in Featherston, .where he received his primary education. • He served >an apprenticeship .to mechanical engineering with D. Robertson and Co., of this city, and was engaged as a journeyman fitter at Petone workshops for eighteen months before proceeding to the Canterbury College" School of Engineering. On leaving; Canterbury College he-served for one year, as' an'assistant under Mr. J. :E. Fulton, M.lnst.C.E., and then received an appointment in the East. On completion of 'four years' service in Rangoon and Singapore, he returned to New Zealand in 1910, and he has since' practised as a consulting engi-1 n'eer. . He holds the 'diplomas of full i membership, in the three chartered engineering- institutions of Great Bri-1 tain—civil, mechanical, and electrical -Vawide distinction not held by any other person in' New Zealand. During his'last term.as a student at Canterbury University College and at tho age 6"f.'24',years he contested the Christchurch'East seat. He showed considerable: ability "as a public speaker, and was beaten by only a narrow margin. In, the 1914 election he was selected to contest Christchurch North in the interests of the Massey Government, and after one of the most keenly fought fights of that election year was defeated by Mr. L. M. Isitt. While from that date his work has not permitted Mry Toogbod'to'take any direct interest in he-has given fully of his time and ability in furthering engineering knowledge in this country, and has particularly .directed his attention to economics.as applied to engineering works. Mr. Toogood is a member of the" executive -, of the Power Boards Association, past president of the Electric Supply Authorities Engineers' Association, and a member of the council of the New' Zealand Society of Civil- Engineers.

Mr.'W.' .1. Mason, J.P., has had. n,i extensive commercial experience for many years in Wellington as a public accountant arid company secretary,

being a Fellow, of the New.Zealand Society of- Accountants, Fellow- of the Incorporated .Institute of Accountants, and-a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Secretaries. He is director, secretary, or-auditor for more than twenty incorporated companies and societies, was. president of the Wellington V.M.C.A. for five years, and has been chairman of that association's finance and administration committee for-the past ten. years; He has served many years on the Wellington Competitions Society, and is president of that society. He is chairman of the entertainment committee of the Wellington Show Association, and has been coiiriected with the community sing movement in Wellington. since its inception about 13 or 14 years ago. He was one of the directors and founders of the Broadcast Station 2ZW, which did so much pioneering work in the interests of the listening public, generally.
