CITY COUNCIL.

business for meeting to-night. art gallery site. The synopsis of the business w> come ucfore to-night's meeting of the City Council contains no reference to the Art Gallery site, but according to * itatement made recently the matter is to be mentioned following on the failure to get legislation before Parliament authorising the proposed exchange ot areas between the Domains Board and tho Hosiptal Board. This legislation, it it had been introduced and passed, would have made available a site on |-,lie lawn in the Hospital grounds. During last week opinion appeared to be growing in favour of a site in North Hagley Park, fronting the Armagh itreet entrance to the Park. The possibilities appear to be that the Council will be asked to-night to authorise the calling of tenders for the erection r»f the Gallery' on the original sitethat in the Botanic Gardens, near the Museum. This appears to be strengthened by the statement made by the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) that if any other site is decided upon it will be necessary to start de novo, the competition for the design having been conducted on the understanding that the site would be the one mentioned, that in the Botanic Gardens. The business to come before the Council, according to the official synopsis, includes the following:— Consideration of charges made on the Bromley Cemetery bus service. Question of acquiring new park for Opawa district. Change of name—Gracefield street to Gracefield avenue. Application for permission to erect boarding corner of Ferry road and Uak street. Question of closing railway crossing, Park road, Addington. Amendment to by-law regarding painting white the back mudguards of bicycles. Acquisition of land for setting back the south-east corner of Stanmore row! and Armagh street. Tenders for printing Municipal Tear Book. Improvements to street lighting corner of Armagh and Colombo streets. Subdivision of property in Aldwin's road, one section of which will have a frontage of less than 33 feet. Subdivision of property in Prosser's road, one section of which will have a lesser frontage than 33 feet.. Subdivision of property in Somme street, one section of which will have a lesser frontage than 33 feet. Reconstruction of Colombo street, between Carlyle and Hastings streets. Position of new fence to be erected between Domains Board property and Eiccarton avenue. Consideration of reconstruction of roads in concrete and bitumen under the roading loan. Consideration of Councillor Armstrong's notice of motion. Resolution to be adopted levying 4he rates for the current year. Resolution to be adopted confirming jtho making of By-law No. 15. Cr. Armstrong's notice of motion, proposing a deduction of 10 per cent, m the salaries of certain of the Council's officers, in order to provide funds ifco find work for the unemployed, probably will cause an interesting discussion.
