MONTHLY SUMMARY. . ■ The following summary of the weather for August, showing barometer, Tainfall and temperature, has been supplied by the Christchurch Observatory. Barometer. Mean for month 29.961; highest reading (August 23rd) 30.429; lowest reading (August sth) 29.000; extreme range 1.429. Temperatures in Shade. Approximate mean temperature for month, 43,50 .degrees; highest . temperature (August 20th), 61.00;' lowest temperature (August Ist), 26.50; mean daily range, 12.80 degrees. Exposed Thermometers. Mean maximum in 'sun, 86.3 degrees; highest readings (August 18th and 30th)j 160 degrees; mean minimum on grass, 31.9 degrees; lowest reading (August Ist), 18.2 degrees. Moisture. Rainfall"-for 30 days, 3.64 in; heaviest fall (August sth), 1.60 in; number of days rain fell, 12; mean amount of cloud, 7.8. General Remarks. The rainfall for the thirty days was 110 per cent, in excess of,the August average rainfall, which'is 1.734 in. The fall in August last year was 1.22 in. The mean temperature for the month was 0.8 degrees below normal, last August's mean being 43.1 degrees. The warmest August was in 1920, when the mean temperature was 46.5 degrees, the coldest being 42.2 degrees, in 1919. The month has been very cloudy, and the mean minimum temperature on the grass being 31.9, whereas last year it was 25.7. However, despite the warmer grass temperature, growth was hindered by the cloudy weather. The only outstanding feature was the very heavy rainfall on August 4th and fj'th. • ' "
