Esmond) 3 Seven started. Length and a half ; six lengths. STABLE AND TRACK NOTES. 4 PUZZLED RACEGOERS. The name of Mrs. A. F. Lawric's four-year-old chestnut horse Ythan has many people puzzled. The name is that of a river in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The reason for it is not apparent from the breeding (Colossus—Waikohu), unless it be in Waikohu, which seems to mean "mist.'' SHOWING SPEED IN HER WORK. Arohamai has made good headway during the last month and is thriving on the work H. Rama is giving her. She is a shade on the small side, though not lacking in speed, as she proved by reeling off half a mile on the No. 2 grass track yesterday morning in 49 3-ss. This was a good effort for a novice, and if she proves capable of going on with it in her races she may eventually pay her way in minor hack events.

1 SHOULD WIN SOON. 1 Boon, who is closely related to Oliui's next foal, Porotiti, being by Poinbal, who t is half-brother to Porotiti's sire, Limond, - siiowed improvement in form at the - Wanganui meeting. He did not get a > good run the first day, and on Saturday ' beat all but Haulbowlinc in the concluding ■ event. Boon looks likely to win an early ■ race. ; RECENT FOALINGS. ', The following are recent foalings at the Elderslie Stud: .Sunkissed, by Bunstav— Kiss Cannon, brown colt by Iliad; Kosita, by .Martian —Favorita, bay colt by Iliad; Quadrilateral, by Square Measure—Poltava, brown colt bj- Night Paid. The colt from the imported mare, Sunkissed, has a double cross of Pilgrimage in his pedigree, a combination that was highly successful in Sansovino, Tranquil, Selene and Perry, four top-class English performers. HAWERA HORSES' PROGRESS. Wlienuakura, who is to race at Foxton to-morrow, was given a trial out of the barrier in company with Carfex at Hawera during the week. Both horses were very keen, and as the tapes were released collided, almost unseating Duncan, who was on Wlienuakura. He made a good recovery and the pair ran two furlongs in 275. Carfex afterwards went four furlongs in 50 3-ss, which ehows he is very well, and he should take some beating in his spring engagements. WHY THEY MISSED. Ranelagh and Hurlingham were both nominated for the Kurow meeting, and it was intended to send them south, providing they shaped well at the Geraldine fixture. The acceptances for Kurow, however, closed on Wednesday, or the night i before the Geraldine programme started, and the owner of the pair did not feel disposed to pay up for them at that stage. The closing of the acceptances for a programme ten days off and before an intervening meeting caused surprise amongst those interested. WELL-BRED JUVENILE. According to reports from Hawera, ifr. A. Alexander, who raced Silver Link, Silvermine, Silver Rule and others, has a most promising two-year-old filly by ; Diacquenod from Wake Up, by Benzonian from Somniform, by Boniform—-Dream. Somniform is a sister to Bon Reve, who won both Derbies and the Great Northern Hurdle Race. She is making steady progress and impresses by the manner in which she acquits herself in pace work. ; She will not be asked to race until Christmas, when she should be very forward. Diacquenod's progeny are all very fast, and Manetho, who scored over seven furlongs j at Geraldine last week, is one of the tribe. 1 ONE TO REMEMBER. On the last day of the Grand National ' meeting the four-year-old Shambles geld- ( ing Bright Red, in F. D. Jones' stable at ' Riccarton, ran a very creditable race in the ' event won by Southdown, finishing in the bunch close to the placed horses. Bright Red ran fourth over a similar distance, six furlongs, at Geraldine, on Saturday, and he j is one to remember for longer journeys in ; the near future. It would be no surprise ' if Bright Red came good, as he is out of ' Luminant, who is by Thurnham out of i Boniform's sister, Sunglow. HACK PLATE CANDIDATE. 1 Although not engaged in any of the handicap events on the first day at Avondale, Gay Marigold is included among the entries in the Champion Hack Plate, a seven- t furlong event run at set weights. She has \ previously shown he:- ability to run out ' the distance, and despite the fact that the ] field is sure to include some of the best ! hacks now in commission her prospects will '• - have to be' seriously considered. It is ! * nearly twelve months since Gay Marigold l won a race, but her track work and condi- \ tion indicate that she is as well as ever, and her winning turn may soon arrive. j RACED WELL IN AUSTRALIA. ! Havering is again in work at Hawera. He is stated to be very big in condition c and it will require softie time to get him 1 into racing condition. Last season he did l all his racing in Australia, winning the t Sydney Handicap, one mile and a half, at 1 the A.J.C. spring meeting, from Mana- 1 whenua, Historic and My Talisman, all I ] New Zealand-owned horses.
