DROPPED DEAD.
MERRY HUNTER'S END.
SON OF MERRY ROE. HORSES FOR FOXTON. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, Thursday. The Gisborne-owned gelding Merry Hunter dropped dead after doing a gallop on the Wanganui track on Tuesday. The five-year-old son of Hunting Song—Merry Roe was brought over from Hastings to run in the Spring Hack Handicap last Saturday, but he was never prominent. He had shown good form on the Hastings tracks and was expected to win a race or two on his trip to Wanganui and Foxton, but had to be eased in his work owing to going amiss. He appeared to be on the improve again, but evidently was suffering from some internal trouble.
On the form shown at Marton, where he ran second in the Maiden, Arctic Region promises to run well at Foxton on Saturday. Maypay is another that should get among the winners. The three-year-old Paper Money filly has a lot of pace, as she showed on the tracks here.
Awaketia must be very hard to beat in the second division of the Maiden at Foxton. She is a four-year-old mare by Humbug out of an Elysian mare, and led to the straight at Martou, where her rider lost an iron, and she faded out. She is owned by Mr. J. Bellis, of Taihape.
Reports from Bulls credit All Humbug with being in good fettle, and he is expected to run prominently at Foxton. He goes well fresh, but with the racing he has had recently Chopin may prove too
good on Saturday. All Humbug should be improved by the outing and be seen to advantage at Avondale. Superior won the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui so comfortably that she must prove very hard for Whenuakura to shake off at Foxton. The Chief Ruler gelding has probably improved since winning at Marton, but he certainly did not score there so impressively as Superior did at Wanganui.
Wanganui form points to Headmistress and En Yidcttc as a likely pair in the Carnarvon Hack at Foxton. En Videttc led to the distance in the Trial at Wanganui, and the son of Hunting Song should soon win a race for Mr. A. F. Symes.
Diatomous has speed to burn, but it is doubtful whether this colt will do much good over a distance. The son of Diacquenocl should, however, run out the seven furlongs at Foxton all right. Spiral appears to have benefited by the racing he had at Wanganui, and the Limond colt is likely to still further improve. He is to make his next appearance at Trentham and all going well will later be taken North for the Auckland spring meeting, by which time he should be at the top of his form. W. Rayner's team for Wellington will include Pomp, Midinette, Rust and Spiral. Midian disappointed on the second day at Wanganui, the first day's race having apparently taken sonic of the sting out of him, instead of having improved the colt. If ho freshens up Midian should show to advantage at the Wellington meeting.
