The Xewmarket Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presiding. Postal Facilities—The chief postmasterwrote stating that the system of mail delivery in Khyber Pass would be rearranged to give the business places at the foot of the street better service. Traffic.—'Die traffic inspector reported having issued 1140 licenses during the first nine months of the year. Heavy traffic licenses returned £078 for the quarter ended August 31, and a further £58 since September 1. Railway Street Closed.—The Railway Department advised that Railway Street had been, fenced off, and the Sarawia. Street crossing opened. Highways Funds—Mr. R. T. Michaels was elected delegate to represent the council at a meeting of protest called by the Auckland Automobile Association to discuss the withholding by the Government of grants to the Main Highways Fund. ■ >I y. Traffic Domes.—'file 1 . Aj^klan.d';Mt(oHio- - Association -wrote suggesting- that white lines should be marked on roads at intersections to guide traffic, as they were more effective than domes. The general purpose committee recommended that the proposal should be considered when the question of installing further traffic domes was being discussed. Library.—The legal and finance committee reported that the membership of the public library 231, and the number of volumes was 3012. Fire Brigade—Captain T. J. Watts reported that the fire brigade had been called to 19 fires during the past year. Xone of the outbreaks was serious, and all were suppressed by the brigade in the early stages.
