» .-, DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Dcvonport Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. E. Aldridge, presiding. Mayor's Report.—The Mayor's report covered the recent activities of the Defence Department in the borough, auu noted with appreciation the Parliamentary, discussions on the matter. He also itemized the properties now taken under the Public Works Act for the building of naval barracks. The decision given by Sir Alexander Herdman in favour of the council's appeal regarding buses plying for hire in the borough was also commented upon as a vindication of the council's )oliey. Stanley Bay Affairs.—Mr. C. M. Browne reported* a conference with representatives of the Stanley Bay Improvement Association and the Croquet Club, at which the croquet club members agreed to accept liability for further work necessary to bring the green into playing condition. The matter of extending the cricket pitcli was deferred pending further advice from that club. The Stanley Bay Park account was at present in credit £SL The matter of water supply to the croquet lawn and the cricket pitch was referred to the engineer for an estimate of cost. Calliope Road Hill.—lt was decided to tar-seal the full width of the roadway leading to the wharf. Consideration of the treatment of adjacent footpaths was deferred till next meeting. Magistrate's Court in Devonport.—Consideration was given of a proposal to utilise the Borough Council Chambers for sittings of a Magistrate's Court in Devonport. It was decided to inform the Justice Department that the council would be prepared to assist in the matter of the usage of the building. . ' , Widening Victoria Road.—An offer of land for street widening purposes was received from a ratepiyer, but it was decided to reply that the council had no present intention of purchasing anymore land for that purpose. • Prince's Street Bus Garage.—Complaint, concerning the establishment of a bus garage in Prince's Street was forwarded by a ratepayer, but owing to the terms in which the letter was worded the matter was not discussed. , Rangitoto Island Affairs. —The engineer reported the progress of track work on the island, and it was decided to visit Rangitoto at an early date. . . Water Supply.—The pumping station returns showed a total of 7,631,200 gallons pumped for the fortnight. Compared with the same period in 1027, before the water meters were installed, this showed an economy of nearly 3,000,000 gallons of water pumped, with consequent reduction of working costs in this department.
