DEATH OF AN "ALL BLACK” FOOTBALLER.—The late WILLIAM MACKRELL, of Auckland, whose death occurred last month following a brief illness, at the age of 32. Deceased was a member of the famous New Zealand Rugby football team which electrified the Old Country in 1905, while in 1907 he went Home with the New Zealand Northern Union team. Mackrell was regarded as one of the finest front row forwards in the Dominion, and his early death is universally regretted in football and athletic circles.

See "Week in Review.” A LOSS TO THE WHOLE DOMINION. The late Mr T. E. Taylor, M.P. and Mayor of Christchurch, whose sudden death last Thursday has been keenly felt throughout the Dominion. The "Lyttelton Times" in an editorial reference to his death said: “Probably there has never been a betterloved or more severely-criticised man in the Dominion than Mr T. E. Taylor, and it is a tribute to the rare intellect and the generous heart of the lost leader that even those who were politically and socially opposed to him are mourning his death almost as they would mourn a personal bereavement or a national calamity."

WOMEN WHO FOUGHT WHILE THE MEN RETREATED—GIRLS OF ALL CLASSES IN THE RUSSIAN “BATTALION OF DEATH.”—Russia’s fighting women are one of the most remarkable products of the Revolution. Girls of all classes have enlisted in the ranks of what they have named “the ranks of death,” and the wonderful story of how they fought the Germans while the men retreated has already been told. They have no fear of death, but dread being captured. Each carries a dose of cyanide of potassium in the event of her being taken prisoner. The illustration depicts Russian Amazons with their mascots, with which, like all regiments, they are equipped.
