THE N.Z. SHIPPING COMPANY’S NEW STEAMER OTAKI NOW AT AUCKLAND. This steamer is the only one in the world having both reciprocating engines and the steam turbine, and on her trial trip (as seen above) she averaged 15.02 knots. This is a high speed for a cargo steamer, and com pares very favourably with her sister ships, Orari and Opawa which are without the turbine.

AUCKLAND’S BIG MOTOR FIRE PUMP—THE LARGEST EVER BUILT. The Opawa, which arrived in Auckland last week, brought a 125 h.p., six cylinder, Dennis turbine fire pump for the Auckland Fire Board. This is the largest powered motor fire engine that has yet been built, the Fire Board having stipulated for a particularly powerful machine. The new engine can throw 800 gallons of water per minute, pumping either from the harbour or from the ordinary street hydrants.
