The annual training camp of the 4th (Walkaton) Mounted Rifles was held this year on the Rotorua Racecourse, and was not only a success, but the men enjoyed the event immensely. This was the biggest mounted camp that has been held in the Dominion, the total strength revealed by the parade slates being 573 of all ranks, of which 100 were infantry casuals, the rest being mounted men belonging to the regiment. The camp was under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Ward (officer commanding the regiment). Of the troops under convas, probably only about half had undergone training of a more or less comprehensive nature, but the task of the Instructional stall' was much lighter than It might be in some districts owing to the fine stamp of men in the ranks. (1) A view of part of the crowd which assembled to watch the military sports held in conjunction with the camp. (2) Quartermaster Sergeant Baddiley (with hat off) watching the serving out of rations. (3) Outside the guard tent at noon. (4) Another view In camp while the sports were in progress.
