A typical soil profile under permanent pasture in the Otakiri district on the Rangitaiki Plains. The top 8in. is Tarawera ash mixed with built-up organic matter on about 14in. of fine pumice which in turn overlies about 6in. of coarse sandy gravelly pumice, and the whole is supported on a layer of peat of variable depth.

A 9-month-old stand of cowgrass sown down on raw Tarawera gravel at Onepu. The whole stand received superphosphate at sowing down, but only the part at right received a further dressing about 7 months later. The response is probably due to the gypsum, as this soil type has shown excellent responses to gypsum applications.
