REPORTED SAFE
New Zealand Member Of H.M.S. Hood’s Crew
One of the complement of 11.M.5. Hood, Petty Officer W. A. Campbell, aged 24, is reported safe, according to a private cablegram received from Greenoch, Scotland, by his mother, Mrs. T. Campbell, of ,61 Bose Road,' Grey Lynn. A letter from him recently stated that he was in the Hood, but no notice-was given of impending transfer and it is presumed that he was in the battleship when she was sunk on May 24.
Of the normal complement of 1341 officers' and men, the only survivors so far officially reported safe are Able Seaman Tilburn, Leeds, one officer and another seaman. •
Joining 11.M.5. Philomel in 1932 Petty Officer Campbell served as leading .torpedoman in the cruiser Achilles during the Biver Plate battle. Shortly before going to England in October last year to train for a commission he was promoted to petty". officer and two months after his arrival was posted to 11.M.5. Hood. Petty Officer Campbell was born at Coromandel and educated at the Mount Albert Grammar School.
