The Christmas Spirit
The Christmas spirit will never die whether nations are at war or in peace and the present occasion has been marked by the exemplary conduct of the troops on leave throughout New Zealand. Of course, there are many, less fortunate, who have had to stay behind to service the great army machine; but no one is neglected on this special occasion. Civilians, too, do their bit in providing cheer and comfort for the common cause. Our brother Tommies and the Poilu’s in the trenches all celebrate the occasion with plum-duffs, extra rum rations, sweetmeats, cake and presents from many sources. There is a lighter side to the grim menace of war also, occasionally one hears a little jollification in the opposite trenches, —a cornet, accordeon, and other such sounds can be detected in the distance whilst a spade or shovel may show itself above the trenches, only to signal a miss to those who are tempted to try out their marksmanship so perhaps, there is a Santa Claus after all.
New Zealanders have indeed enjoyed a merry Christmas and are in good heart to “carry on” in the New Year in the same spirit as their comrades in arms.
