Captain B. A. W. Warburton-Lee, H.M.S. “Hardy”, Narvik, 10th April, 1940.
Captain B.A.W. Warburton-Lee was posthumously awarded the V.C. for his gallantry, enterprise and daring in the first, battle of Narvik. This was the first Victoria Cross to be awarded in this war. Knowing Narvik to be strongly held, Captain Warburton-Lee attacked on his own initiative, leading a fdrtee : of five destroyers up Ofot fjord in heavy snowstorms. Attacking at . day-break he took .the enemy completely by surprise, and made three successful attacks on warships and merchantmen in the harbour. On the flotilla withdrawing, five German destroyers of superior gun-power were encountered and engaged. A shell - hit the bridge of H.M.S. Hardy”, mortally wounding Captain WarburtonLee. His last signal was ‘‘continue to engage enemy.” Captain Warbur-ton-Lee ' was born in 1895 at Whitchurch, Salop. ,
