WET CANTEEN IN WOMEN’S CAMP.
On Saturday, October 11th, a wet canteen was opened at the women's camp, W.A.A.S., in Levin. A vote had been taken of the girls and by two to one they voted against the canteen. But it was opened, and sold alcoholic drinks on Saturdav.
A strong protest from Levin churches and W.C.T.U. has been sent to the local M.P., Minister for Defence, Prime Minister and Air Force Commander, and a deputation has waited upon the Air F'orce Commander. >
As many of the girls are under 21 years of age, strong protests will be made.
DENIAL BY MINISTER. "The Public can be assured that no permission has been or will be authorised for the establishment of wet canteens for members of the W.A.A.F. serving at Levin or elsewhere. If members of the W.A.A.F. have been offered opportunities of obtaining intoxicating liquor at Levin this was done without the knowledge or authority of Air Force Headquarters or myself, and will be immediately stopped. Meantime I have called for a full report on the matter.” —"Evening Post” (Oct. 14, 1941).
