Memorial to the late Mrs. Sievwright.
We have received from Gisborne a circular embodying a proposal to raise i a National Memorial to the late Mrs. Margaret Home Sievwright, “as a recognition of her untiring wotk for the advancement of women and also in many other branches of labour for the uplifting and welfare of humanity." The Gisborne ladies, with the Mayoress (Mrs. Townley) at their head, have taken the initiative in the matter and have formed a committee to carry out the project. This committee invites subscriptions from the women of New Zealand (irrespective of creed or association). Suggestions are also invited as to the form the proposed memorial should take.
As will be seen lroma report appearing elsewhere, the suggestion made by the Canterbury Women’s Institute is that an annual prize be offered for an essay on “the advancement of women ” With this suggestion we most heartily agree. The subject is a wide one, and may be treated either prospectively or retrospectively ; while the study necessary for the writing of such an essay would be educative, and in itself do much to continue the good work so unswervingly engaged in by the one whose beautiful life it is desired to keep in remembrance.
In furtherance of the scheme one well - wisher points out (ist) that a small local committee in each centre would probably be found helpful in collecting subscriptions, and (2nd) that if small donations, from 1/- upwards, were invited, a great many possessed of only limited means, but appreciative of the life lived, and grateful for the work done, would be able to add their mite. The fund would thus be matelially swelled and the oflering the more truly national.
