Christianity In China. The Generalissimo has asked for 1000 Christian workers to act as , morale officers m the Chinese army. This is the first time m history that a non-Christian nation has set up a Christian chaplaincy for its -armed forces. The National Christian Council for China is dealing with the request. The Bishop of Central Tanganyika Pleads For Recruits. "So tied to routine and office work and oppressed by the lack of any opportunity to deal with individual souls because of the time, yesterday the Archdeacon said to me: 'I feel just like a machine.' Both Deaconess Crawford and Deaconess Bransgrove have been m bed for the past fortnight and they have also had Sister Adams, a third sick patient, m their house, and Sister Paull, a fourth resident, was also ill for part of the fortnight. "The Archdeacon is worrying much about the situation. The doctor ordered Archdeacon Kidner away to Mjorogoro to recover from an attack of fever lately. He is really too valuable to let his health be so undermined. The office work and correspondence and the strain of comings and goings at Dodoma is more than enough for two assistants, as I have previously indicated the one for the Bishop being free to help the Archdeacon during the Bishop's journeying m other parts of the Diocese. This is not a 'panicky' letter, but a statement of plain facts, which must be faced. May the Lord thrust out a suitable helper for him s soon. I am praying hard for. such a one, for I appreciate §o much the minisr try of the Archdeacon and his spiritual gifts, that to, me it is frustrating the Spirit of Grace when his own personality is so over-burdened that he is not .free to pass on the Word of Life as he would like to the heathen on our very doorsteps." On Thursday morning I was called up m the middle of my quiet time for a little Diabetic, and I had to do all sorts of things for him and pull him round. That meant that I wasn't dressed or breakfasted when the bell -went and I had a Bible Class to take" immediately after the bell. Then it was operation morning, and m the middle of my ordinary operation list an emergency abdominal operation arrived which took me \\ hours to do. Then m the afternoon the Diabetic finally died, as did two others m the men's hospital; also a child with

meningitis came m, and after giving a lot of trouble died, too. After supper I was slinking off thankfully and exhausted to bed when I found a midwifery case behaving queerly. I had to do a little job for her. Then went to b& and slept only to get up to her. an hour later. After finally getting to sleep again 1 was awakened at 3.30 a.m. by another midwifery cas"e which needed an immediate operation. The theatre would not heat and I have a most inadequate staff. Will you please pray for Dr. Blackwood and all pur missionary doctors, especially "The Jungle Doctor" m Tanganyika, that God may provide and give His grace and help.
